Canada is one of the most popular destinations for international students, offering world-class education, cultural diversity, and a pathway to permanent residency. To study in Canada for more than six months, most international students must obtain a Study Permit, which is the official authorization issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
The study permit allows you to study at Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada and may include work privileges under certain conditions.
1. Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
You must have a valid Letter of Acceptance from a Canadian DLI. Ensure the school is on the IRCC’s list of approved institutions.
2. Proof of Financial Support
You must prove that you have enough funds to cover:
– Tuition fees for the first year
– Living expenses for yourself and accompanying family members
– Return transportation for yourself and accompanying family members
As of 2024, IRCC requires a minimum amount of CAD $20,635 per year for living expenses (outside Quebec), in addition to tuition. This amount is updated annually.
3. Proof of Identity
You must submit:
– A valid passport or travel document
– Two recent passport-sized photos (for paper applications)
4. Statement of Purpose / Letter of Explanation
Though not mandatory, this document helps visa officers understand your study goals, choice of program, and long-term plans. It’s strongly recommended for demonstrating your intent.
5. Immigration Medical Examination (IME)
Required if:
– You plan to stay for more than 6 months
– You have lived in designated countries for 6+ months in the past year
– You plan to work in certain occupations (e.g., healthcare, childcare)
6. Police Clearance Certificate
In some cases (Based on the country requirements) , you may be asked to provide a police certificate to prove you have no criminal record.
7. Ties to Home Country
You must convince the officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay—this is often demonstrated through family, financial, or employment ties back home.
8. Biometrics
Most applicants are required to give fingerprints and a photo after applying.
